From the first week of June 2011 Cairns Great Barrier Reef Australia will be the new host nation destination to become a part of the global TEAM Challenge, Challenge Family series of half and full day iron distance races that feature major events in Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand and now Cairns Australia.
This Cairns Triathlon event will now be on the calendar up to year 2015 and run alongside other competitive events such as kite surfing and mountain bike riding.
Out door concerts and lots of fun events will be arranged for everyone to get into the lively atmosphere and maybe you could even think about joining in on some of the family and children's triathlons that will be organised around the main event. Just make sure you register early.
In terms of the Cairns scenic course and natural backdrop the Challenge Cairns event is tipped to match the iconic status of the Hawaiian Ironman.
Challenge Cairns Triathlon will feature a course memorable for the 3.8 kilometer swim in the tropical waters of Yorkeys Knob - The 180 kilometer bike leg that travels up one of the most breathtaking scenic coastal roads in Australia towards the small but world famous Port Douglas - and a 42.2 kilometer grueling road run.
Challenge Cairns will have the highest prize money of any 'Challenge' branded triathlon in the world $142,000 making it second richest triathlon in the world.
Currently the pinnacle 'Challenge Distance Event' is held in Roth Germany. Challenge Roth is a legendary event attracting 5,000 competitors and 150,000 spectators every year, returning an economic benefit to Germany of around $18.4 million.
This iconic Cairns event will attract athletes from all over Australia and across the world with competitors arriving for pre-race acclimatization training and post race touring, sight seeing and other fun activities with family and friends.
As an example the Noosa Noosa - Triathlon Multisport Festival and Mooloolaba Triathlon are sold out almost a year in advance and over the years they have made a big impact on their local economy during traditional tourism low seasons with guests opting to holiday in the region for up to two weeks at a time.

The Port Douglas Coral Coast Triathlon is a traditional yearly event for Port Douglas and north Queensland and is hotly contested with outsiders flying in to compete with the Cairns and Port Douglas locals.
This year the event is to be included as part of Challenge Cairns triathlon adventure festival with the event being run over the last weekend in May.
Triathlon athletes competing in this event would need to arrive a few days earlier to acclimatize to the heat and get to know the triathlon course layout to give them the best advantage.
