Horse riding gives you the opportunity to experience nature at its most intimate level. Rather than sitting in a bus or riding on a boat, you actively participate in the handling and control of the horse.
Prior horse riding experience is unnecessary, and the guides will instruct you on the best way to handle your horse. The horses provided by trail companies are always of a friendly nature and are suited to each rider's experience and ability.
The rides take place through bushland and rainforest, along golden beaches, and atop mountains offering spectacular views of the Coral Sea, island and surrounding mountains.
Horse riding expeditions can be as little as half a day, or can run for up to a week in duration.
All you need to bring for a single-day horse riding adventure is:
- Long pants (denim jeans are good)
- Strong shoes (preferably hiking boots)
- Swimming costume
- Camera
- Sunscreen

Their horse-riding trails meander through beautiful bushland and rainforest, allowing you to get in amongst nature and experience it first hand. The trails are perfect for absolute beginner riders through to the more experienced rider. Your horse is hand-picked for your particular skill level, you are provided with a safety and introductory riding lesson and then split into groups by skill level so as to ensure you have a safe and fun horse riding experience.
Blazing Saddles Half Day Horse Riding Tour
The Half Day Horse Riding Tour departs from Kuranda at 8:15AM and 1:15PM daily. It is advised that you wear long pants and covered shoes (no thongs or trail sandals), and at least a T-shirt. Optional items such as sunscreen, hats and sunglasses would also be helpful.
The riding tour starts with the friendly staff greeting you with Morning or Afternoon Tea as well as some formalities. Once the horses have been assigned, the staff go through a riding safety lesson.
The Half Day Horse Riding Tour then commences through bushland surrounding the Blazing Saddles complex. Native Australian forest and rainforest surroundings provide interesting and adventurous trails and many native animals and birds. The tour alsol includes a mini cattle round up and other Australian animals. The tour then ends with a return to Blazing Saddles for a BBQ lunch or Home-style meal.
Port Douglas Horse Riding Adventures
Based in Port Douglas, Black Mountain Hideaway is a large operational cattle farm surrounded by dense rainforest. Their horse riding treks and rainforest trails are especially suitable for families or travelling groups. Black Mountain Hideaway has quite a number of horses available to riders, which have been specifically trained and suit all experience levels of horse riders. So if it's your first time on a horse, or you are a skilled rider, Black Mountain Hideaway has the horse for you.
Your horse riding guides at Black Mountain Hideaway are passionate horse lovers and have a lifetime of horse experience. They are also conservationists with extensive knowledge of the surrounding rainforest and Port Douglas region. It is advised to wear trousers, closed in shoes and a long sleeve top while you are horse riding.

The Two Hour Trail is a horse riding adventure on the historical Bump Track through spectacular rainforest and Black Mountain Hideaway's own ancient logging tracks. View the Mowbray Valley, Mowbray River and the Big Mowbray Falls from 550m above to the sea below. A great experience for both riding beginners and more advanced horse riders.
Black Mountain Hideaway Four Hour Trail
You will enjoy this horse ride on the national trail to water Lilly Lagoons, ride the stock route through the Australian Bush Savannah and enjoy the view of the Cairns Great Barrier Reef from high mountain tops. A trail you will never forget!
The local area boasts the second highest population of bird species in the world and you can meet native pet rainforest free flying parrots - who may even join the horse ride!

The full day horse riding tour includes an exotic lunch and a chance to relax at our private water lilly lagoon. The horse ride can involve riding through the Australian Bush Savannah, or exploring the spectacular rainforest, enjoying the views from high mountain tops or the 500m magnificent Mowbray Falls.
Overnight Outback Experience
The overnight horse riding tour includes two days of riding, which can involve riding through the Australian Bush Savannah, exploring the spectacular rainforest and enjoying the views from high mountain tops and the 500m magnificent Mowbray Falls.
Three Day Trek Adventure
This three day horse riding adventure involves spending three nights camping out in the bush with all trail tucker meals provided. All horse riding trails can be tailor made to suit your family or group.
There is a chance to relax or swim at a private water lilly lagoon and the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, dingoes, prolific birdlife, brumbies, wild cattle and feral pigs.
